Nick Kyrgios played at the US Open for the first time this year, but his quest for a second Grand Slam title ended in disappointment when he was beaten by World No.2 Daniil Medvedev.

Kyrgios, 20, was aiming to become the first Australian to win the Open in three years, the first of which came with a victory over Djokovic in 2015. He started his quest in New York and after his shock defeat to David Ferrer and David Goffin, he decided to try his luck at the tournament in August in Flushing Meadows in New York.

“At this time, I’m going to see what’s in my mind about the game and then it will be about what I do in practice and on the court,” he said after yesterday’s US Open final between Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.

But he faced a familiar obstacle in Medvedev.

In a pulsating three hours, Medvedev used his pace and height to beat Kyrgios 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in one of the best matches of the tournament.

“I just felt the heat of the match, I just wasn’t comfortable for three hours,” Kyrgios said. “I was a little bit nervous. I was expecting it to be a tough match and I really didn’t expect it to be this easy. I feel like I have never beaten him.”
