Lula da Silva will return to Brazil’s presidency in stunning comeback victory over Fernando Henrique Cardoso
Lula da Silva, the former Brazil President in jail, has defeated his nemesis in a landslide victory over Fernando Henrique Cardoso, the former Brazilian President who was a strong opposition leader and won the presidential elections three years ago.
He took more than 50 percent of votes and is now set to return to the presidency, according to the final election results.
Lula received more votes than any of his rivals but fell short of the 50 percent threshold to win the presidency.
Cardoso, Brazil’s first democratic President, was in a close battle to Cardoso’s Socialist Workers’ Party (PT) candidate, Ciro Gomes, but Cardoso managed to pull ahead in the final count to become the winner of the presidential election.
Lula was one of the most popular leaders in Brazil and his popularity was a main reason why he was considered the country’s future President.
In the final results released in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, Lula won more than 50 percent of the vote, with 45 percent going to Cardoso.
The former president was re-elected in second place with 18 percent, while his Workers’ Party (PT) was in third place with 12 percent, behind the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) and the Brazilian Democratic Movement (PDT), according to the final results by the Instituto Datafolha.
The former President lost his right to run for a second term.
